The Chicago Teachers Union Participates in the Mexican Independence Day Parade
The Latino Caucus, affiliated with the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU), sponsored a float in the Mexican Independence Day Parade on Sunday, September 13, 2015. In a day of bright sunshine, an estimated 250,000 gathered to celebrate Mexican independence from Spain in 1810. Little Village, 26th Street between Albany and Kostner Avenue, is the epi-center of the Mexican community in Chicago. The shopping district along the 26th street corridor rivals Michigan Avenue in total retail sales.
This was a good opportunity for the CTU to reach out to many residents about the upcoming teacher's strike, charter schools and Dyet High School closing. The CTU was the only Union float in the parade. Other Unions missed an opportunity to be represented in front of a burgeoning labor force.
