Haymarket Books and Democracy Now sponsor Amy Goodman
On Tuesday May 17, 2016 Haymarket Books sponsored Ms. Amy Goodman and Mr. Jeremy Scahill to discuss the future of independent investigative journalism in today's political climate.
Amy Goodman is an investigative journalist that has covered the East Timor independence movement of 1991 and Chevron Corporation's role in Nigeria. Since 1996 Ms. Goodman has hosted Democracynow.org. radio prorgam.
Ms. Goodman was initially upbeat about the future of progressive journalism. This was based upon recent events including Bernie Sanders' campaign and movements that link together, such as the Arab Spring and Occupy. Although there are still continued efforts by the corporate owned, consolidated media that is squashing needed journalistic reporting. She also cited Robert McChesney from the University of Illinois as pivotal in exposing the effects of the corporate media on free speech.
